For those seeking an added level of safety without the weight and volume of an airbag pack. The SB 40L, featuring the Safeback avalanche survival system, is the second lightest avalanche safety pack on the market after the SB 30L while also being fully featured and able to accommodate hut trips and overnight objectives. The SBX system can be easily removed and only takes up .75L in the pack vs. the 4-6L of a typical airbag pack, giving the SB 40L the ultimate versatility. Safeback Tech
Air supply for 90 minutes
Air supply for 90 minutes

A lighter and smaller alternative to an airbag. The SBX system provides an active air supply for 90 minutes in the event of an avalanche without having to put anything in your mouth. It works by circulating fresh air from the surrounding snowpack flushing out carbon dioxide that has been exhaled, delaying asphyxia. The fresh air is pulled in with an electronic fan unit and circulated around the mouth through tubes installed in each shoulder strap.

Reasons we are excited about Safeback:

  • It can easily be turned off so it can be activated pre-emptively.
  • Works for treewell burials.
  • The SBX system can be removed and takes up only .75L in the pack vs. the 4-6L of a typical airbag pack.
  • No mouthpiece required.
  • Significantly lighter than airbag systems.

SBX Integration
Removable SBX System
Removable SBX System

SBX works by pulling in fresh air with an electronic fan unit which is then circulated around the mouth through tubes installed in each shoulder strap. The SBX system can be easily removed and re-installed in a few minutes giving you a super versatile pack.

Avy Tool Pocket
Quick Access to your tools
Quick Access to your tools

When designing the SB 40L we wanted to prioritize quick access to your avy tools, and really quick access to your probe while also improving the space efficiency and bringing the tools closer to your center of mass. The probe can be accessed without taking your pack off for quicker rescues and more efficient snow study.

The shovel can be access by dropping one shoulder strap. The pocket is made to accomodate shovels up to 11.5" in width and most large shovel handles. By putting the probe and shovel handle on the side panels of the pack we increase the space efficiency and bring the weight closer to your center of mass.

The LF 40L uses UHMWPE based materials (generic Dyneema) in different constructions.

  • The main fabric is Challenge Ultra 400TX which is 2x more tear-resistant and 8x more abrasion-resistant than competing ultralight fabrics. Updated to TX for 2024 for interior durability.
  • The cinch top is a 210d nylon with UHMWPE ripstop.
  • The rolltop is a 50d nylon ripstop with UHMWPE cross-ply.

Back Panel Access
Full access to main compartment
Full access to main compartment

The only way to get access to all of your gear regardless of how you are carrying your skis. We think back panel access is essential to any backcountry ski pack built for moving efficiently in the mountains.

Back Panel Design
Breathable, durable, stiff
Breathable, durable, stiff

The back panel this year is updated and is one of the biggest innovations on the pack. The new backpanel is lighter, more durbale, more brethable and stiffer. We made it stiffer because many backpanel access packs bulge outwards when stuffed and lose their carrying comfort and breathability. We developed a molded composite insert with anti-bulge ribs that keeps the back panel shape unless stuffed to the max.

No zip stash
No zipper transitions
No zipper transitions

The LF 40L has 2 compartments that you can quickly stow gear in without touching a zipper. Both act as wet pockets with drainage to keep your wet gear like skins separated from your dry gear.

Stowable roll top

Storm mode → Bluebird mode

Roll up the rolltop for a weatherproof closure and get an extra compartment. If it goes blue and you don't want to deal with the roll top use the stow clips to keep the roll top out of the way.

Ski Carry
New modular ski/board carry
New modular ski/board carry

The diagonal ski carry can be moved between 3 positions the first two are either diagonal direction and the 3rd position is for skimo carry. The pack also has A-frame and vertical snowboard carry. The ski carry is attached to the frame for stability and weight distribution.

Helmet carry
Integrated helmet carry
Integrated helmet carry

We had enough of the dingy, strap-on helmet carry systems. We have seen too many people lose them, and they aren't secure enough to put anything inside your helmet like crampons. We built our helmet carry right into the pack so it can't be lost. It is also high up enough to be out of the way of the diagonal ski carry and still allows the pack to sit flat on the front.

Ice Tool Carry
No snag ice tool carry
No snag ice tool carry

The ice tool carry keeps the picks of the tools fully enclosed and secure so they don't get snagged or fall out.

Removable Frame
Frame distributes weight
Frame distributes weight

The aluminum frame runs the perimeter of the pack, dips behind your head, and down to the hip pads distributing the weight of the pack and providing rigidity for ski/snowboard carry. It weighs 80g and can be removed.

DESIGN PHILOSOPHY

We research and develop for steep terrain. We believe that the best gear isn’t dependant on any one variable, like being the lightest, but a combination of style, weight, durability, and functionality to address a certain need.
