Avy Tool Pocket
Quick Access to your tools
Quick Access to your tools

When designing the LF 40L we wanted to prioritize quick access to your avy tools, and really quick access to your probe while also improving the space efficiency and bringing the tools closer to your center of mass. The probe can be accessed without taking your pack off for quicker rescues and more efficient snow study.

The shovel can be access by dropping one shoulder strap. The pocket is made to accomodate shovels up to 11.5" in width and most large shovel handles. By putting the probe and shovel handle on the side panels of the pack we increase the space efficiency and bring the weight closer to your center of mass.

Back Panel Access
Full access to main compartment
Full access to main compartment

The only way to get access to all of your gear regardless of how you are carrying your skis. We think back panel access is essential to any backcountry ski pack built for moving efficiently in the mountains.

Back Panel Design
Breathable, Durable, Stiff
Breathable, Durable, Stiff

The back panel this year is updated and is one of the biggest innovations on the pack. The new backpanel is lighter, more durable, more breathable and stiffer. We made it stiffer because many backpanel access packs bulge outwards when stuffed and lose their carrying comfort and breathability. We developed a molded composite insert with anti-bulge ribs that keeps the back panel shape unless stuffed to the max.

Ski Carry
New modular ski/board carry
New modular ski/board carry

The diagonal ski carry can be moved between 3 positions the first two are either diagonal direction and the 3rd position is for skimo carry. The pack also has A-frame and vertical snowboard carry.

No zip stash
No zipper transitions
No zipper transitions

The LF 40L has 2 compartments that you can quickly stow gear in without touching a zipper.

Stowable roll top
Storm mode → Bluebird mode
Storm mode → Bluebird mode

Roll up the rolltop for a weatherproof closure and get an extra compartment. If it goes blue and you don't want to deal with the roll top use the stow clips to keep the roll top out of the way.

Helmet carry
Integrated helmet carry
Integrated helmet carry

We had enough of the dingy, strap-on helmet carry systems. We have seen too many people lose them, and they aren't secure enough to put anything inside your helmet like crampons. We built our helmet carry right into the pack so it can't be lost. It is also high up enough to be out of the way of the diagonal ski carry and still allows the pack to sit flat on the front.

Ice Tool Carry
No snag ice tool carry
No snag ice tool carry

The ice tool carry keeps the picks of the tools fully enclosed and secure so they don't get snagged or fall out.

Removable Frame
Frame distributes weight
Frame distributes weight

The aluminum frame runs the perimeter of the pack, dips behind your head, and down to the hip pads distributing the weight of the pack and providing rigidity for ski/snowboard carry. It weighs 80g and can be removed.

Top Access Zipper

Pass through zipper to the main compartment at the top ideal for stuffing in layers and is not blocked by the helmet carry.

Best ski touring backpack I've owned!

I just took last year's Raide FL 40L backpack for a ski tour up Mt. Hood in Oregon - the backpack functioned really amazingly and is clearly well designed. My bag weighed ~18 lbs and the shoulder/hip straps felt comfortable. I really love the glove carry on the left shoulder strap. Since I didn't have much stuff inside, I was able to fit my climbing helmet inside. My only complaints about this pack are: 1) cost and 2) there's no way to clip in or secure a water reservoir.

Excellent touring backpack

This backpack is absolutely fantastic. I just wish the seams in the shoulder straps were padded better because they are uncomfortable

Almost perfect

Many have said before all the great things about this pack. My favorite feature is the helmet carry which dubs as skins/coat/other carry.

The only thing that confused me is how you are supposed to stow the amino carry strap at the top of the pack in a way that it is readily accessible when you want to do a quick skimo carry. That had actually been a big selling point of the pack for me. Turns out you can buy a really great skimo carry hook separately, which works better. Still a great pack though.

The last ski backpack you’ll buy

Between work and play, I’ve used this pack almost every single day from December till now (mid April). Without a doubt this is the most high functioning piece of gear that I have ever used. What Raide did here was not try to reinvent the backpack, but instead took all of the best ideas from across the market and put them together in an extremely thoughtful way, with high quality craftsmanship. As a cinched down day pack it carries like a dream, and I hardly notice it while skiing. I live in the PNW and the waterproof material has kept all of my goodies dry on some truly biblical rain days. I recently had the opportunity to try out its multi night capability and it performed very well. It carried 40 ish pounds of gear plus skis and boots about as well as you can hope for without a complicated and heavy frame/ suspension system. I think for true winter camping I would opt for a larger pack, but for hut trips and spring missions the max volume with the roll top expanded was quite adequate. I was in between the M and TL sizes and opted for the T; sometimes I think it feel a bit too long, but I think that’s part of what helps it carry so well when filled to the brim. I would be curious to try a medium size someday. I also am curious to try the 30L but, the 40L does everything so well that I don’t think I could ever justify owning both. Thanks Raide for putting in the work to make a product that actually lives up to the hype!

Great pack

Super light yet very well thought out pack. I love it but just beware that storage for probe and shovel, while very thoughtful is quite different to most other backcountry:touring packs. If I have one observation is that storage seems on the slightly small side for 40l (med back). Hugs my back really nice and diagonal ski carry is do easy to use!

DESIGN PHILOSOPHY

We research and develop for steep terrain. We believe that the best gear isn’t dependant on any one variable, like being the lightest, but a combination of style, weight, durability, and functionality to address a certain need.
